Reading, Digging and Burying - Queen's Wood Exhibition

On Saturday 11th September I will be performing a ritual of reading, digging and burying in Queen's Wood, London. I will be reading from my writing on time, memory and loss - and using my bare hands to dig with.

Please join me at 5pm in the main clearing of Queen's Wood, from where the performance will begin.

A special pamphlet of texts, taken from my book 'Body' and used in my performance, will be available from an Honesty Box in the woods after the performance and also on Sunday 12th September.

My Reading, Digging and Burying performance is part of Cut Back, an exhibition of site specific and performance art, taking place in Queen's Wood on the weekend of 11th and 12th September, organized by Rekindle Arts. It features work by many different artists, which will be installed throughout the woods, come rain or shine!

Cut Back is open from noon til dusk on Saturday 11th September, and from 10am to dusk on Sunday 12th September. The private view is on Saturday from 4pm to Dusk.

Nearest tube: Highgate on the Northern Line.
Then a ten minute walk down Wood Lane, which becomes Queen's Wood Road and takes you alongside the wood. The exhibition is in the portion of the wood on your left hand side. Take any path into the wood and make your way to the main clearing for more information about the exhibition, and the start of my performance.

There are many pictures, in reverse chronology, of the Exercise Rizlas and the Pie Napkins in their pristine pre-wood condition, in their increasingly weathered and soggy state, and after having been dried out. New Dust at the Walsall Artists' Book Fair

I will be taking part in the Artists' Books and Independent Publishing Fair, at The New Art Gallery Walsall on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd May 2010, where you can see the 2nd edition of 'Dust Pamphlet.'

'Dust Pamphlet' contains a sequence of short texts about the ‘bin scavengers’ and other stories of filth from my observations. The text is interspersed with illustrations, from my original ink and watercolour drawings, including ‘the heap’ and imagery inspired by mourning jewellery. The pamphlet interlaces ideas of the Victorian dust heap, dirt and searching to reflect on memorialisation and loss.

I created 'Dust Pamphlet' as part of a residency and exhibition, also entitled Dust, at Hovel in November 2009 (see previous posts, below). After an encouraging response to my hand-stitched first edition I decided to produce a second edition in 2010. The new Dust will be published by Site Projects on 21st May, ISBN 978-0-9554379-6-0.

DUST Pamphlet

As part of my intervention at Hovel I produced a pamphlet entitled 'DUST'. The pamphlet contains a sequence of short texts I have written regarding the bin scavengers, whom I have observed, and other reflections on filth. The text is interspersed with illustrations, which connect my observations of dirt and searching with loss and memorialisation. The pamphlet is A5 size, printed on 95g acid free paper and is hand stitched. It is printed in an open edition, each copy signed and numbered.
